Labour division within households

To complement questionnaire findings, gender division of labour of the main livelihood strategies were discussed during focus groups. Men and women were asked to list individual tasks undertaken in the maize/vegetable gardens, rice fields, coffee groves, and rearing livestock, which were stated as the main income sources for respondents. Income was earned mainly through garden produce in Maulefo and coffee in Tomanamo, whereas in Selihasan rice production and livestock sales were important.

Although men and women did different tasks, in their view, participants in the male and female focus groups felt that both sexes shared similar workloads. Male labour was mainly put into labour-intensive activities, such as clearing land for maize and rice cultivation, building field fences, packing and transporting crop harvest. Female labour was equally labour intensive, focused on planting, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and sorting of crop produce, typically with the help of children. Our study did not examine reproductive work within the households. Both male and female focus group respondents were in agreement that the female’s domain was ‘inside the house’, suggesting that women contributed more to childrearing and nurturing of the family. Indeed, the 2007 Timor-Leste Living Standards Survey reported that women spent considerably more time than men caring for children and doing other household-related chores (NSD 2008).
